Violence In Mali Sets Back Peace Deal

A suicide bombing in Mali killed at least 50 people and wounded dozens of soldiers in a Gao military camp. It’s unclear whether a group will take responsibility for this act of it was a lone attacker, but the bombing will put an even greater strain Mali’s peace efforts. Four years ago, the French military led an intervention to drive jihadis from power across major cities in the country. A peace deal was eventually signed in 2015 that included Taureg rebels who once fought the Malian military, but the agreement meant both parties would form join patrols of cities and at-risk areas, which simply hasn’t happened yet. Since then, Mali has become the world’s deadliest United Nations peacekeeping mission, where 29 UN personnel were killed last year.
