Syria’s Peace Talks Are Starting To Go Somewhere…

On the second and final day of peace talks in Kazakhstan, and “tortuous efforts” to even get people talking, Russia, Turkey and Iran have agreed to set up a trilateral monitoring body to enforce the ceasefire that came into effect in December. Better late than never, right?

Under the agreement, the three countries will use their influence over separate circles to urge those responsible for breaches to maybe chill out a bit. However, neither the Syrian government nor the Syrian opposition were present at the talks where the final document was signed. The rebels, still resisting the idea of Iran’s presence as a monitoring party, said it would present alternative proposals.
