TOUGH NUT: STILL IN THE NEWS
Charleston: What We Know Now
- The gunman, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, has been charged with nine counts of murder.
- Among the victims was esteemed Reverend Clementa Pinckney who was also a state senator.
- A website that has been linked to Roof gives a window into his hateful thinking. According to the New York Times, Roof cites the shooting of Trayvon Martin as the root of his racism.
- The site, which no longer works, apparently included photos in front of Confederate heritage sites and a 2,500-word racist “manifesto”.
- Roof had also apparently discussed his plans for murder with friends after having bought the gun with the money his parents give him for his 21st birthday.
- This is a time to reflect both on race relations and the toll of gun violence in this country.
