IN A NUTSHELL: MUST READS Wikileaks Hits Saudi Arabia: Paranoia, Limos And Iran Whistleblower website Wikileaks released 60,000 Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs cables on its site this weekend. They offer a window into how the Kingdom conducts its foreign affairs. The cables cover a broad range of topics including unpaid limo bills by a Saudi Princess, a pathological paranoia with Iran and that, by and large, money can indeed buy you friends. The Saudi govt. has issued a statement calling the cables “clearly fabricated” and threatening prosecution to those who distribute them… The best part is, there are more releases to come.
Belgium And France Go After Putin On Friday the Belgian and French governments froze Russian state assets as part of an arbitration court ruling in favor of Yukos Oil Shareholders. Yukos was the focal point in a clash between Vladimir Putin, Russia’s President and Russian oligarchs, led by Mikhael Khodorkovsky, in a plot that could have been lifted from a spy thriller. The court states that the Russian government purposefully destroyed the company and ordered restitution to Yukos shareholders. Khodorkovsky is now living in self-imposed exile in Geneva after spending several years in a Russian court. The case is by no means over as Belgium has reportedly “unfrozen” some assets. TOUGH NUT: STILL IN THE NEWS Charleston: What We Know Now
  • The gunman, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, has been charged with nine counts of murder.
  • Among the victims was esteemed Reverend Clementa Pinckney who was also a state senator.
  • A website that has been linked to Roof gives a window into his hateful thinking. According to the New York Times, Roof cites the shooting of Trayvon Martin as the root of his racism.
  • The site, which no longer works, apparently included photos in front of Confederate heritage sites and a 2,500-word racist “manifesto”.
  • Roof had also apparently discussed his plans for murder with friends after having bought the gun with the money his parents give him for his 21st birthday.
  • This is a time to reflect both on race relations and the toll of gun violence in this country.
